‘We still don’t know what happened there. Not really. I went searching for them when I’d heard nothing after some time. I found Jean leant up against a palisade at Ahmad’s house, the one he’d bought in one of the nicer quarters of Pau. At first, I thought he was ill, seeing a glassiness to his eyes and an unhealthy greying of his pallor. He was feverishly incoherent. I was more disturbed initially by my old friend’s absence and shook the man, demanding Ahmad’s whereabouts. He just kept muttering and mumbling as he licked at the sweat pouring down his face when it touched his lips. All I could really get was something about service to the Lady, although whether it was in relation to himself or to Ahmad, it was far from clear.
